A'van Gas Leak Solutions
When cleaning under their A'van recently, Dennis Thornton was alarmed to discover that the flexible hose from the gas bottle regulator to where it is connected to the bulkhead was severely scored (left photograph). On inspection, the gas would certainly have leaked if the tap on the gas bottle had been turned on. It appears that the hose must have been resting on the brake cable, and over time gradually wore through the sheathing. True to form, whilst at the Pambula AGM, Dennis inspected the hoses of as many of the 220 A'vans there as he could manage! There was evidence of similar chafing on many of the A'vans that had the gas hose routed under both bars of the gas bottle carrier. There was no evidence of chafing on those A'vans where the hose was routed under the front bar but over the rear bar of the gas bottle carrier (right photograph). He alerted the owners to the potential safety problem who were most appreciative. Well worth a look and re-routing and/or replacing of the hose if necessary.
Many thanks Dennis!
In our June 2005 newsletter (see above) we reported on Dennis Thornton's alarm when he discovered that the flexible hose from the gas bottle regulator to where it is connected to the bulkhead was severely scored (left photograph). As mentioned previously the damage was thought to be due to the hose resting on the brake cable, and over time gradually wore through the sheathing. Obviously this would be a potential safety issue - particularly if the damaged hose was under or even inside the A'van. Recently we came across the Gasfuse (centre photograph), the main purpose of which is to cut off the gas supply if it detects a serious leakage, but it has a gauge which gives a good indication of how much gas is left in the bottle. It is also useful for testing your gas system for leaks when all the gas appliances are off. It provides 100% automatic shut-off in the event of a major leak, gives a low gas indication which prevents unnecessary cylinder swaps or refills, and protects the environment from gas emissions.
Easy to fit (right photograph), easy to use, it costs around $30 from outlets such as
Bunnings - well worth the investment!
