Wheel Levelling Block Storage in a A'van SportlinerBulls-eye Spirit Level on A'van "A" Frame Fore and aft levelling can usually be achieved by adjustment of the jockey wheel but crosswise levelling involves use of a "levelling block" under the lower tyre. (Some travelling companions are known to be obsessive about this having to be "spot on", otherwise sleep will be impossible!) Various levelling blocks are commercially available but the better designed ones are relatively long, and as such can require a lot of storage space. As storage space is at a premium in a Sportliner, and our travelling philosophy is that everything required for the A'van must be stored and carried in the A'van (the tow vehicle has the bikes and, other than ourselves, nothing else!), we have made a wooden levelling block, but of a size which can be stored in the space under the rear locker door. Timber Wheel Levelling Block The levelling block is made from lengths of softwood timber 175 mm wide by 35 mm thick, shaped and screwed together as in the photograph above. The overall dimensions are 500m long by 140 mm high by 175 mm wide. Levelling Block Under Near Side Tyre When travelling, the levelling block is stored in the space under the rear near side locker as indicate in the photograph below. It is secured via a length of aluminium angle (further bent to match the front slope of the block) fixed to the chassis member behind the mud flap, and a further length of aluminium angle fixed to the existing chassis member at the rear. A notch cut along the rear of the block mates with the rear aluminium angle. An elastic strap secures the block snugly between the two lengths of aluminium angle.
