Simplified Tow Ball to Trailer Coupling AlignmentIf the tow vehicle has a hatch type rear door and one or more of the rear seats can be tipped forward, consistent "first time" alignment is easier. A contrasting coloured stick is temporarily fixed to the rear of the tow ball cover with blue tack or elastic bands. The stick needs to be long enough to be seen from the driving seat (say 500 mm) and stand vertically: "Stick" attached vertically to rear of tow ball cover" Wind up the jockey wheel so the coupling is higher than the top of the tow ball cover. With the rear hatch door open and the rear seat folded down, it should be possible for the driver (by looking over his or her shoulder) to see the position of the stick and the trailer coupling. Slowly reverse toward the coupling until the stick starts to tip over. Stop immediately and do not let the vehicle move even slightly backward or forward. With luck, the coupling should now be directly over the tow ball: View from driving seat as stick and coupling align Remove the stick and the tow ball cover, and wind down the jockey wheel to bring the coupling onto the tow ball: Coupling aligned over the tow ball Simple and effective... and might even save a marriage!
